Just as engineers were getting used to the current rules regarding ‘RoHS-compliant’ components, the goal-posts are about to move again. Stephen Watts & Stephen Hopwood of Syfer Technology raise some serious issues that will concern all electronics designers and specifiers.
As environmentally-conscious citizens, most engineers welcome the spirit of the RoHS legislation, the WEEE directive, REACH and similar initiatives aimed at reducing the impact of man-made waste on the environment. Engineers are responsible for ensuring electronic equipment performs as required, so keeping track of new legislative requirements, and assessing the potential impact of material changes on design, adds another layer to an already complex product development process.
Now changes are being proposed to the EU RoHS Directive (dubbed RoHS2 by industry), and although not yet confirmed, a wide range of amendments are expected. The overall scope of the directive is likely to expand to include virtually all electrical and electronic equipment not...

An invaluable kit for any Development Engineer

Demand for Syfer Technology capacitors is continually growing, but selecting the most appropriate MLCC for high frequency circuit applications can be a difficult task for any Engineer. Syfer has now made that easier with a range of sample kits for its range of High Q chip capacitors.
The standard kits cover the most common sizes and capacitance values, as in the 0402 size with 24 capacitance values from 0.1pF to 33pF. Other chip sizes included in the kits are 0505, 0603, 0805 and 1111.
Other capacitor sizes, or other values can be requested, or even a change of termination to FlexiCap™, Syfer’s award-winning solution to reducing the possibility of mechanical cracking.
These kits will aid new circuit designs in the telecom infrastructure industry; in broadcast power amplifiers, high RF power circuits, filtering, diplexers and antenna matching applications.

Engineers have been using de-rated DC multilayer chip capacitors (MLCCs) for years to meet the need for capacitance in AC circuits higher than the 4.7nF norm. While such a solution provides the required reliability, that is, the device will work in the circuit, there is no knowledge of precisely how the capacitor will behave under operational conditions. To address this issue, UK MLCC manufacturer, Syfer Technology, has set out to classify both C0G and X7R dielectric materials for use in AC environments. The result is the availability of a range of capacitors for AC applications, with a consistent and predictable response, allowing designers to make a more informed selection decision.

Innovative developments in manufacturing processes and materials technology have led to significant extensions in Syfer Technology’s range of 100V and 200V X7R surface mount MLCCs (multilayer chip capacitors).
As a result, values have increased dramatically, delivering up to double the capacitance in the same size package as previously. This ability to reduce package size or increase capacitance range will prove critical to meeting today’s tight design constraints.
The range extensions are a direct result of Syfer’s continuous quality improvement programmes, such as Lean and 6 Sigma, as well as material and process developments. An important area targeted for improvement is the ‘wet process’, where the wet ceramic and electrodes are printed layer by layer under automatic computer control. This is a critical stage in the manufacture of ceramic capacitors, and these specialist materials have been subject to on-going improvements, yielding positive results. In addition, greater control through automation, over all parts of...

Copper barrier caps - just what the doctor orde...

Syfer's non-magnetic, copper barrier MLCCs are suitable for today's higher temperature lead-free solders

Approved!
